Ajay Shah was born in Bombay-India in 1964, and graduated in Design at The National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad- India.
In 1990 he set up Exemplar Systems Private Limited along with his brother Abhay Shah to design, produce and retail contemporary convenience furniture. He designs the Applause folding director’s chair, April stacking, the Qubix office furniture range, Gloria the office chair, Jazba the office partitioning system and a range of computer furniture systems. They set up the distribution chain for the products and coordinate the design, production, and marketing of the furniture systems.
In 1992 he set up Circus Design Company in Bombay. He designs furniture for retail stores, consumer products (ceiling , wall mounted and table fans,water purifiers, and instant water heaters) for industry, interiors for recording studio’s, retail brands and office spaces for advertising agencies.
He designs a gaming center,signage systems and kiosks for the first Mall in India-Crossroads.
In 1996 he designs a range of lifestyle products ( injected moulded plastic coasters, glasses, visiting card holders) producing and retailing them through Exemplar Systems Private Limited.
He designs a touch screen kiosk system for Orange cell phone service providers for open spaces.
In the year 1998 he proposes a range of watch designs based on contemporary Indian graphics for SWATCH Switzerland.
In 2002, he re-christens Circus Design Company to Ajay Shah Design Studio embarking in designing projects in a wholesum fashion.
Transit-the food lounge is the first food court in the country is designed from concept to branding, graphic identity and applications, furniture design and the interior look and feel.
Fuel the food stop is the next food court. This is followed by Terminal food court for Infosys in Bangalore, Via 1, food street, Fully Loaded-game for food, and several more.
A food kiosk is designed for Fries and Brown in a complete knockdown fashion, Infobay a kiosk offering Internet services for all is designed using Fiber reinforced plastic.
In 2005 Ajay Shah Design Studio embarks in designing large format multi-brand stores for Pantaloons-a multi-brand and multi format large format store. The studio designs 18 large format stores for the brand nationwide.
In 2006 he designs a store for a home furnishing store Zeba in New York
In 2006 he designs an independent architecture and an interior project for a menswear store-Prestige in Bangalore.
In 2007 he set up Picture This Studio Private Limited offering graphic design and way finding signage solutions.
Picture This Studio Private Limited designs several identities for start up brands and also offers super graphics for cinema operator PVR Cinema across the nation.
In 2006-2008 he designs new furniture. He introduces furniture pieces such as the BLOCK bench, POD, SIT, ART tables which he produces and uses for his interior projects.
In 2007 the studio design large format home stores branded as Frame.
In 2007 he set up Rubberband-keep it together-a stationary brand offering smart stationary.
In 2008 he designs Edition One a display fixturing system. The system is versatile in nature offering shelving, hanging and several accessory attachment options for home, office and retail scenario.
During 2007 and 2008 the studio designs small and large format retail and hospitality interiors building full solutions from concept, branding to interiors.
Ajay Shah Design Studio, Exemplar System Private Limited and Picture This Studio Private Limited are currently based in Bombay and continue to design for established brands and start up on projects ranging from product development, self initiated products for Rubberband, interiors for food courts, retail identities and furniture designs.
